Centre Orphelinat Tumaini (COT)
Centre Orphelinat Tumaini was built and opened in 2001 to meet the growing needs faced by orphans in Lubumbashi, one of the biggest cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tumaini orphanage (COT) makes efforts to provide housing, clothing, food, healthcare and education to the 53 children who call this place home; however this continues to be an overwhelming daily challenge. Some of the children at the orphanage were taken off the street and others were handed to the orphanage by the governments’ social affairs department (DIVAS).
Once the children are at the orphanage there is no follow up from the government, they become the responsibility of the orphanage. These children – who are between the age of 3 and 18 and have been orphaned either because of war, disease, extreme political unrest, injustice and/or poverty – need to know that their existence matters. Once the children are 18 years old they can no longer live at the orphanage, this makes room for new children to be brought in, but also leaves the young adults to fend for themselves in very harsh living conditions.
The orphanage building is deteriorating and in desperate need of renovation. There is need for new beds and mattresses as well as new appliances to ease their day-to-day function. Despite their best efforts, the orphanage continues to struggle to meet the growing needs and high cost of living. Apart from sporadic donations from good willed people and local churches, Tumaini does not receive any support or funding from the government.

GET TO KNOW US
Nakuona is a Swahili word that means ‘I SEE YOU’. We are a charity with the heart to help improve the quality of life for orphans in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our future hope is to expand this support into other African and third world countries, letting the children know that they are seen, that they matter. We desire to lighten the burden for the orphanages by helping to meet their most pressing needs and in so doing practically show them the love of Christ.
We would love to do this with YOU.
