This Is Jean

Jean has been at Centre Orphelinat Tumaini for the past 6 years, this is the only home he has ever known. He knows little to nothing about his life before being at the orphanage. When asked about it, he simply said that one day he woke up and was at the orphanage. He is in primary school now and will live at the orphanage until he is 20 years old which is the age limit for all the children who are taken in. “My prayer is that God would help me and when I grow up, I will also help others who come to the orphanage.” This is Jean. This Is Paul

- Their stories

This Is Paul

Paul came to the orphanage when he was 4 years old. His grandmother heard from the church she was attending that an orphanage was built for children without parents and that is how he came to be at Centre Orphelinat Tumaini. “My father died when I was 9 months old and my mother brought me to my grandmother when I was 2 years old and she too died.” Paul lived with his grandmother until he was 4 years old and then was brought to the orphanage and has been there ever since. He is now in his 2nd year of university and is thankful for the opportunity to study. He was enrolled into the university by good willed women who had visited the orphanage but the continued costs are a burden and he remains dependent on donations to complete his studies. Paul is unsure of what the future holds, but he is hopeful. This is Paul. Nakuona – I see you

This Is Joel

- Their stories

This Is Joel

Joel knows very little about his family or the circumstances around which he came to be at the orphanage. He was brought to Centre Orphelinat Tumaini as a young child and has been there ever since. He thinks his mother is alive somewhere but more than that he does not share or does not know. He is currently in his 1st year of university and is studying Economic Science. “Sometimes I have to wake up at 4 am to get to university because I have to walk a long way if there is no money for transportation.”
The transportation would cost about 2000 Congolese franc, this is the equivalent of € 0.82 “We face quite a lot of challenges; there are outstanding fees that are pending to be paid, so a big problem we have is lack of funds” This is Joel Nakuona – I see you

Centre Orphelinat Tumaini (COT)

- Orphanages

- Centre Orphelinat Tumaini (COT)

Centre Orphelinat Tumaini was established in 2001 to respond to the growing needs of orphans in Lubumbashi, one of the largest cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The orphanage is home to 53 children between the ages of 3 and 18, many of whom were rescued from the streets or placed in the home by the government’s social affairs department (DIVAS).
Tumaini works hard to provide the children with a safe place to live, along with food, clothing, healthcare, and education. However, with limited resources and rising costs, these needs have remained a significant daily challenge.
Through the support of generous donors and local partners, NAKUONA e.V. has been able to step in and bring meaningful change to the lives of the children at Tumaini. We have:

  • Renovated the kitchen area.
  • Painted the interior of the orphanage.
  • Provided new beds and mattresses
  • Renovated the toilets and showers
  • Restored the courtyard as a safe play space for the children
  • Delivered essential items like food, toiletries, clothing, children’s books, and Bibles
  • Carried out multiple food drives and ongoing support initiatives.

Thanks to this continued support, the living conditions at Tumaini have significantly improved, and the children are now growing up in a cleaner, safer, and more hopeful environment—reminded that they are seen, valued, and loved.

Maison D’accueil

- Orphanages

Maison D’accueil

Maison D’Accueil, meaning “House of Welcome,” is an orphanage located in the heart of Lubumbashi, one of the largest cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This orphanage is home to 118 children, ranging in age from 2 to 20 years old. Despite dedicated efforts, the facility struggles to meet the growing demands of caring for these vulnerable children.
The children currently endure difficult living conditions, including leaking roofs, cramped sleeping spaces and worn-out mattresses. While four devoted overseers work tirelessly to care for them, much more support is needed to ease their burden and remind them they are not alone. The orphanage continues to welcome new children, as many have no other place to turn.
The children at Maison D’Accueil have faced unimaginable hardships. Some have lost both parents and were brought in from the streets, while others have lost one parent and, due to extreme poverty or illness, are unable to be cared for by their remaining family.
Providing adequate housing, clothing, food, healthcare, and education for all 118 children remains a daily and overwhelming challenge. Like many orphanages in the Congo, Maison D’Accueil receives no financial support from the government, other charitable organizations, or churches. Its survival depends solely on the generosity of a few individuals, which is insufficient to meet the needs.
NAKUONA e.V. learned of this orphanage through trusted local contacts. This is precisely why we exist: to reach those still unreached, offering practical, tangible support that improves the children’s quality of life, relieves the orphanage’s burden, and shares the unchanging truth of God’s love with them.

Doing our part

Dear Friends, Donors, and Supporters,

We are committed to the well-being of the children we serve. And with support from you, improving their quality of life is not a dream — it’s a real possibility. Thanks to your generosity, we have expanded our support beyond the orphanage ‘Tumaini’ and are now also supporting another orphanage called ‘Maison D’Accueil’, meaning ‘house of welcome.’

Both Tumaini and Masion D’Accueil (MD) have received our support this year. At Tumaini we were able to renovate the courtyard, giving the smaller children a safe and beautiful space to play and socialize. We also renovated the kitchen, making it easier to use with more storage and counter space. For both orphanages we provided food and toiletries. Lastly, we were able to provide school fees for children of MD to return to school who otherwise would not have been able to.

At NAKUONA e.V., we are committed to bringing relief, dignity, and hope to orphaned children in the D.R.C. — not only by supporting their basic needs, but by working to make orphanages more livable and children’s lives more hopeful. We are not here to replace what other charities are doing; we are here to do our part – reaching those yet unreached.

Together we can do more

Dear Friends, Donors, and Supporters,

In a world often focused on what divides us, it is our ability to care — to act — that truly unites us. Through your support of NAKUONA e.V. you remind us that we all have the capacity for positive impact in our world.

Our big project this year was to renovate the toilets and showers at the orphanage Tumaini. After months of fundraisng, your generosity made it possible for the children at Tumaini to have beautiful, clean, and well-functioning hygiene facilities. A vital step in creating a comfortable and secure environment for the children.

The orphanage Tumaini, which means “hope” in Swahili, is more than just a shelter. It’s a place that the children call home. With your continued support, the children are receiving not only the basic essentials, but through every act of kindness are being reminded: ‘I matter’.

-John Burroughs

Together for Hope, Together for Change

Dear Friends, Donors, and Supporters,

As the year draws to a close, we at NAKUONA e.V. want to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved together – and to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support. This December, we were able to visit the orphanage Tumaini, spend time with the children and see the new beds and mattresses that were previously donated.

Because of YOU, over 50 children at Tumaini Orphanage in Lubumbashi now sleep in new beds, live in a refurbished orphanage with fresh paint, received Christian childrens’ books and bibles, a few new clothes as well as food and toiletries this year.

We have brought joy, laughter and hope to the children who call Tumanini home. Through your generosity, we have met some of their emotional, spiritual and physical needs.

Together, we’ve lightened burdens and lifted spirits. Let’s continue to stand beside the children of Tumaini — because every child deserves a chance to grow up in a world that sees them, values them, and believes in their future.

You didn’t just donate. You changed lives.
